Callaway Gardens Wedding Photographer

Callaway Gardens sits in Pine Mountain, GA, about an hour and a half south-west of Atlanta, and the reason couples drive it is the chapel. A stone chapel with arched openings, stained glass and wooden pews, built right at the edge of the water — it is one of the most photogenic ceremony spaces in the state, and it behaves differently from any other venue we shoot.

The memorial chapel

The chapel’s arches are the thing. They frame the lake behind you, so a portrait taken in the archway has water and trees in it without you going anywhere. Late afternoon, when the light comes off the water and back up into the stone, you get a soft backlight through the opening that we could not build with equipment if we tried.

Inside it is darker and quieter than couples expect — stained glass, stone, timber, and pews rather than chairs. It photographs like a small church, which is exactly what some couples are after and worth seeing in person if you are deciding.

The water, the rocks and the boardwalk

Step outside the chapel and you are on the water. There are rocks to walk out onto, a boardwalk, and enough shoreline that we can move you three or four times inside ten minutes and get completely different backgrounds each time.

This is the part of the property that makes the drive pay. Most venues give you one good portrait location. Callaway gives you the archway, the shoreline, the rocks and the gardens, all within a short walk of the ceremony.

It also means we can keep moving without dragging you far. On a hot Georgia afternoon that counts for a great deal — nobody wants to hike in a gown in August, and here nobody has to.

The gardens and the reception

Beyond the chapel it is a resort and a garden, which means the reception can go several ways. We’ve photographed a clear tent on the lawn with chandeliers and hanging florals, and an indoor reception under timber beams with a string quartet playing before the ceremony and a band later on.

The two looked nothing alike, and neither felt like it was fighting the venue. That is the useful thing to know if you are trying to picture your own day here: the chapel sets the tone for the ceremony, and the reception is still yours to decide.

After dark on the boardwalk

The boardwalk stays lit once the reception is going, and those railing lights give us something most venues cannot — a warm line of light running away behind you with the lake black beyond it. Night portraits here are straightforward, and they cost you about ten minutes away from your guests.

It is also far enough from Atlanta that the sky genuinely goes dark. On a clear night the stars come out properly — there is a frame in the chapel wedding below with the couple tiny under the Milky Way. Say early if you want one, because it needs a clear sky and a short walk away from the lights.

Planning a wedding at Callaway Gardens

Pine Mountain is a drive for most Atlanta guests, so many stay over — and that changes your timeline for the better. A crowd that is already on site is a crowd that turns up to the ceremony relaxed and stays to the end of the reception.

For photography, plan around the light on the water rather than the clock. Our wedding photo timeline examples set out a few versions, and at Callaway we would usually shift portraits later than we would in the city.
