“Snow one day, tulips the next!”

Check out Sarah + Sean’s engagement session at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina! At the time these two lived in Asheville, so Biltmore was right in their backyard. Their session was in April, and the day before, it snowed on our drive up into the mountains. We were a little nervous but the next morning the sun came out and the gardens were covered in tulips!

Tulips in the Walled Garden

We started in the Walled Garden, and it was in full bloom. Rows and rows of tulips in every color, with the Conservatory right behind them. Sean even spun Sarah around in the middle of it all.

Inside the Conservatory

Then we ducked into the Conservatory for a little warmth. It’s all palms and tropical plants under a glass roof, and it felt like a different world after the snow the day before.

The House and the Mountains

We couldn’t come all the way to Biltmore and skip the house! We walked up to the front lawn for a few photos with the house behind them, then out onto the terrace to look out over the Blue Ridge Mountains.

A Quick Change and Some Champagne

For their second look Sarah switched to jeans and a floral top, and Sean changed into a navy sweater. We ended back in the garden with a bottle of champagne, because what better way to celebrate?

Planning a Session at Biltmore

Biltmore is a ticketed estate, so everyone in your session needs a ticket, your photographer included. We didn’t need a separate photography permit for an engagement session, just our tickets.

If you want tulips, spring is the time to go. Biltmore plants tens of thousands of them in the Walled Garden, and they’re usually at their peak in mid-April.

Sarah + Sean’s session ran about 90 minutes in the late afternoon, which was plenty of time for the gardens, the Conservatory, the house and a quick outfit change.

We went on a Saturday and it was pretty busy. If you can, pick a weekday for fewer crowds.

Since this session, Sarah + Sean got married, and we were there for that too! Their wedding Mass was at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Roswell, and the reception was at the Hilton Alpharetta Atlanta.

Sarah + Sean, thank you for showing us around the Biltmore Estate. Snow and all, it was worth the drive!
